    March 20, 2009 – Game Recap

    Rink Dawgs – 4   Saints – 4

It felt good to get our first points of the season despite blowig a 4-2 to lead.  I thought we came out in the first with a lot of jump and we sustained a good forecheck.  The chances on goal were not that many but we managed to capitalize on one with 4:44 to go in the first, when Ted Kolkas drove a blast past the goalie.  The Saints were able to tie the game late in the first with a powerplay goal, making the score 1-1 after one.

We started the second half very quickly when just 15 seconds in,  Antonio Geraci converted a one timer from a nice pass by Bruce Tiam-Fook.  Tommy Kolkas later scored to make the score 3-1, but shortly after his goal the Saints brought it back within 1.  With 9:37 to go in the game, new recruit Nurhan Cicekci scored on a wrist shot from the point, where their goalie was screened by Jamie Farrow.

With the 2 goal lead restored, I believe we thought we had the game won.  We have to give some credit to the Saints for fighting back to tie the game, if anything it just shows how we need to play harder and smarter in our defensive zone.  All in all, we played a decent game and like I said it was nice to get the point.  Let’s carry the effort to Monday’s game at the Rinx for 6:30pm.

    March 9, 2009 – Game Recap

    ML Warriors – 2  Rink Dawgs – 1

It’s starting to sound redundant, Rink Dawgs out penalize their opponent 24-2!  That’s correct 7 two minute minors & a 10 minute misconduct vs their 2 minute minor which was on a coincidental, therefore not even a powerplay opportunity all game for us.

Needless to say, the Warriors took the game to us all night.  With all the powerplays against us, they racked up the shot totals and scoring chances each period.  If it wasn’t for the stellar goaltending by Pat Lucas, the outcome would have been much worse.  The only other positives to come out of the game for us was the goal manufactured by the new addition line of Giovanni, Alex & Mike along with the solid defensive play of new defenceman Rick.

It has been a tough start to the season, with 7 games remaining we still have time to make some noise in the division.  I want to leave you with a quote……………………..

“Great players win games.  Great teams win championships”
    Bruce Tiam-Fook

    Game Stats:

Shots: ML Warriors 27  -  Rink Dawgs 10
    Powerplay: none
    Penaltykill: 2 for 4

    Player(s) of the game:
    Pat Lucas   25 saves
    Giovanni Jr. Pentrelli  1G
    Mike Garcia  1A

    March 2, 2009 – Game Recap

    Toronto Jaguars – 4  Rink Dawgs – 1

As you can imagine spending much of the game killing penalties, makes it awfully difficult to mount any kind of attack in the offensive zone.  Not to mention it messes up all the line changes and kills any momentum you may have at different times of the game. Needless to say we had difficulty sustaining any kind of pressure all game, it felt like every time we had something going we shot ourselves in the foot with a penalty.

Not only was it frustrating watching us take penalties, but the fact that we took stupid penalties.  In 2 games so far this season, we have been up against teams who are carrying what seems like 4 lines and I think this will be the trend with all of our opponents.  We are looking at bringing out a few extra bodies each game to help us match up better against these armies.  So everyone will need to be committed to quicker line changes and better think twice about taking bad penalties, or you will find yourself sitting out shifts.

    Game Stats:

Shots: Toronto Jaguars 20  -  Rink Dawgs  11
Powerplay: 0 for 5 (gave up a shorthanded goal)
    Penaltykill: 5 for 6

    Player(s) of the game:

Not sure that any of us are deserving of this honor, but I thought the penalty killing units did a decent job.
